About Us

From humble beginnings at Ramsgate Markets to new beginnings at Glebe Markets, discover the story behind Dumpling Cheers and our handmade dumplings.

Cheerin' for delicious dumplings

The name Dumpling Cheers is a celebration of who we are — a heartfelt blend of Chinese heritage and Australian spirit.

When Jason first arrived in Australia 20 years ago, one of the first expressions he picked up was the word “cheers”. It wasn’t just about raising a glass; it was something people said with a smile at the end of every interaction — a simple word that carried warmth, friendliness, and connection.

Later, when Jason and Rosalie were dreaming up a name for the family business, they first considered “Chi’s Dumplings” — a nod to the family name Chi, and also symbolises energy, life force, and balance.

But in the end, Dumpling Cheers just felt right. It captured the essence of what they wanted to share: the comfort of handmade dumplings, the joy of coming together over good food, and the universal feeling of connection that bridges cultures.

It’s more than a name — it’s a warm invitation, a cultural fusion, and a little nod to every “cheers” said across tables, markets, and moments.

  • Est. 2013 – A market opportunity

In 2013, Jeffrey and Amy set out to share their soul-warming Northern Chinese flavours with Sydney. Armed with generations-old family recipes and a dream to open a restaurant, they instead found their calling at Ramsgate Market in Sydney South, where their panfried dumplings quickly became a weekend ritual for locals.

Chewy, golden-crisped wrappers. Juicy fillings bursting with flavour and umami. Word spread, and soon, queues snaked through the stalls. But for Jeffrey and Amy, it was never just about the food – it was about recreating the unpretentious joy of Northern Chinese culture and tradition, and serving them fresh with a smile.

  • COVID hits

At the height of the COVID lockdowns, local markets scene survived as people were confined to a limited radius from home. Many people discovered markets for the first time! Business were coming along for Amy and Jeffery despite the apparent struggles.

In 2021, the next generation of the family Jason and Rosalie stepped into the fold, blending tradition with ambition.

COVID gave us pause, but not defeat. Jason and Rosalie started at the picturesque Bayside Markets by the busy Botany Bay, Sydney. Serving the same family recipe dumplings to visitors.

  • Stepping into Glebe

In 2022, Jason and Rosalie opened their business at Glebe Markets for the first time. They sold out their dumplings for the first time because they didn't expect the overwhelming response from people – it was an instant hit!

Week after week, we saw familiar faces return for dumplings, stories, and laughter. Glebe wasn't just a market – it became our home base, our proving ground and sanctuary, and the start of a whole new chapter.

  • Rooted in Glebe, Growing Beyond

Glebe Markets became our heartbeat post-COVID – a home base where Dumpling Cheers found its rhythm. Glebe Markets gave us a new stage, new faces, and a renewed sense of purpose. The energy, diversity, and open-hearted spirit of the community fuelled our love for what we do.

From there, we began expanding to vibrant markets across Sydney and beyond: Kirribilli, Bondi, Coledale, Bulli, Maroubra, and more. Each new location brought fresh connections and familiar faces. What started as a humble stall was now a growing community fuelled by dumplings and shared smiles.

  • a warm invitation, a cultural fusion, and a little nod

Our name is our story. "Cheers" was one of the first words Jason learned when arriving in Australia – an everyday farewell, a gesture of friendliness. We considered "Chi's Dumplings" top honour our heritage, but Dumpling Cheers said it all. It reflects our cultural fusion, the joy of sharing good food, and the warm connection that happens across a plate of dumplings.

Today, we cater, we serve, we create. And we welcome you – always – with dumplings and a cheer!
